Crowning one of the highest peaks of the Eastern Taurus Mountain range is the temple-tomb built by the late Hellenistic King Antiochos I of the Commagene Kingdom in the 1st century BC as a monument to himself. It has been listed a one of the best places in the world to see the sunset. Monumental statues of Greek and Persian gods are perched upon their thrones on both sides of the mountain sitting in front of the sanctuaries. We will also be visiting the ancient city of Perre, Karakulus Tumulus, Cendere Bridge, and the ancient city of Arsemia. This day tour is a day you will never forget. It is full of ancient history and natural beauty all around you.

Day 1: Mount Nemrut

Early in the morning we will leave Istanbul and fly to Adiyaman. If this tour is an add on to the Genesis Tour, we will leave Sanliurfa early in the morning. Our first stop after leaving Sanliurfa is at the ancient city of Perre. Here we will see the beautiful remains of Roman and Commagene remains of the city, and the necropolis cut out of the bedrock. After having lunch in Adiyaman we move closer to the Taurus Mountains where we encounter Karakus Tumlus, which was built by Mithridates of the Commagene Empire for his wife and his daughter. Our next stop is the Cendere Bridge (Severan Bridge) built in honor of Septimius Severus in the 2nd Century AD. Afterwards we make a stop at the ancient city of Arsemia, the royal seat and cultic center of the Commagene Empire. This area is a stunning landscape with breathtaking views and unblotted scenery. Afterwards we will make our way around the gorge and halfway up Mount Nemrut where we will stop to eat at a local restaurant. We will reach the summit of Mount Nemrut and witness one of the most exciting locations in all of Turkey. UNESCO named Mount Nemrut the 8th Wonder of the World and it is an unparalleled view of the region in upper Mesopotamia. Antiochus I Theos built his tomb here with two alters of colossal size gods facing both the sunrise and the sunset. Some believe the man-made peak is older than the sanctuaries attributing it to be the tomb of King Nimrod himself. After watching the most beautiful sunset in the world we make our way back to the Adiyaman airport for your return flight to Istanbul.
